Chair
Louise Taylor
Louise Taylor currently serves as the Retirement Center’s Policy Board Chair, as
well as an at-large member of the Executive Committee of the UC Berkeley Emeriti Association. She retired in 1998 after working 34 years in the Chancellor’s office. After retirement, she then worked another eight years , first for the College of Engineering to help establish the new Department of Bioengineering, and then UC Merced where she worked on two plans - enrollment and faculty recruitment. After her post at UC Merced, Louise took a position with the UC Office of the President Budget Office where she worked on the California Institutes for Science and Innovation. Louise received her B.S. from the University of California,
Berkeley. Her favorite pastime is
gardening in Grass Valley where she lives, attending concerts, going to the theater and entertaining
friends.

Sheldon Zedeck
Sheldon Zedeck is the Vice Provost of Academic Affairs and Faculty Welfare and
Professor of Psychology. The Retirement Center reports to his office administratively and he serves on the Center's Policy Board.

Richard Malkin
Professor Richard Malkin serves as Policy Board member, as well as the President of the
UC Berkeley Emeriti Association. He retired in 2004 after working for 35 years in the Plant
and Microbial Biology Department. Professor Malkin served as Chairman of Plant and Microbial
Biology Department and Associate Dean of College of Natural Resources. He received his B.S.
in Chemistry from Antioch College and the Ph.D. in Biochemistry from UC Berkeley. He continues
to teach undergraduate biology courses, loves to travel, and listen to classical music – especially
opera.

Howard Mel
Representing UC Retirees’ Association at Berkeley
Marian Gade
Marian Gade serves as President of the UC Retirees’ Association at Berkeley (UCRAB) and
as one of its representatives on the Center Policy Board. For 35 years, both within the University
and through other sources, Marian was a Research Associate with UC President Emeritus Clark
Kerr, working with him on a variety of projects, mainly involving studies of college and
university governance, finance, and history. She assisted with the research, organization,
and editing of his two-volume set of memoirs of his years as Berkeley Chancellor and UC president.
For the last two years of her employment, Marian was also Deputy Director of UC Berkeley’s
Center for Studies in Higher Education.
Marian is active both organizationally and playing/singing music with the San Francisco
Folk Music Club. She is a 50+ year Girl Scout, a former president of the SF Bay area council,
and is also currently a member of a committee recommending a governance structure for a new
consolidated Northern California council. Marian is a former whitewater kayaker and kayaking
trainer. Other long-time interests and activities include being a ham radio operator
involved in west Contra Costa County emergency preparedness efforts, the chair-elect of the Council of University of California Retiree Associations (CUCRA), president of UCRAB, and the grandmother
of a wonderful 2-year-old girl.
Iola James
Iola James serves as Vice President of the UC Retirees' Association at Berkeley (UCRAB) and as one of its representatives on the Center Policy Board.

Patricia Pelfrey
Keith Sexton
Keith Sexton serves as the UC Office of the President and Regents Retirees’ Association representative for the Policy Board. He retired in 1994 after working 23 years at UC with his last appointment being statewide Dean of the University Extension and Summer Sessions programs. Currently, Keith serves on the Executive Committee for PARRA, and the UCOP Advisory Committee on Health Care Facilitator. Other activities include volunteering at the Moraga Library and enjoying his grandchildren. He received his B.A. in Political Science and his M.A. in South Asian Studies at UC Berkeley.

Eugene Binnall
Gene is a Past President of the EX-Ls, an organization of retired and former LBNL employees. He joined LBNL in 1960 as an Electronics Engineer and became an Electronics Group Leader in 1964. He retired as a Senior Staff Electronics Engineer at the end of 1998 after over 38 years with the Laboratory. Gene has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, both from UC Berkeley. As an LBNL employee he has served as a Participating Guest at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and spent nearly five years assigned to the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) in the Washington, DC area. Gene continues his association with LBNL as a “Rehired” Senior Staff member.
