Become and Advocate for UC's Budget
Dear Colleagues,
We have a special opportunity to advocate for the University of California budget. The Regents will meet this week to approve the University’s 2010-11 budget proposal that will ask the state for $900 million more in funding. That amount includes money to restore core funding for UC’s operations and to meet the state’s funding obligations to employees in the UC Retirement Plan. The budget request also includes money to support more than 14,000 enrolled students for which the state currently provides no funding. At this point in the budget process it would be very helpful to send a letter or email to the governor asking the state to reinvest in higher education and support the UC’s budget request. Later it will be time to contact members of the legislature.
To facilitate your participation, the University has established a website “UC for California ” (http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/advocacy/about.html). On the website you can sign up as an advocate, take action by sending an email to the governor, find elected officials, etc.
The competition for the state’s resources is unparalleled. Emeriti and retirees represent a large constituency that can make a difference. We have helped make the University of California be the best public institution of higher education in the nation. It is critical that we ensure it will be able to continue to provide quality education, research, and service in the future. Please take a few minutes to join the UC for California advocacy and urge members of your Emeriti and Retirees' Association also to become advocates for the University’s budget.
