Emeriti Association (UCBEA)
Though the Center is almost ten-years-old, it is predated by the Emeriti and Retiree
Associations (UCBEA and UCRAB) which began as membership organizations on the Berkeley
campus in the 1980s. In fact, several retired faculty and staff members who were active in
those groups were instrumental in bringing the Center concept to fruition at Cal. Today,
these self-funded, self-governed associations are still going strong. Center staff provides
them with administrative support and their leaders sit as members of the Center’s Policy Board.
Association membership is not necessary for participation in Center events. However, the
associations offer additional member-specific events and serve an important advocacy function.
They also participate in the Council of University of California Emeriti Associations (CUCEA) and the Council of University of California
Retirees Association (CUCRA). These systemwide councils actively work to develop communication
channels among campus groups and among emeriti, retirees and UC. They also foster the retention
and improvement of the benefits and privileges of UC retirement. (For information on Association
membership, call or email the Center.)
